The winner of the Great Neighbour category in Derby Telegraph’s Community Champion Awards 2015 was 87-year-old Len Elsmore of Mickleover.
The award category was sponsored by Trade Windows and Managing Director, John Brocklehurst presented the award to Mr. Elsmore at a ceremony at the iPro Stadium on Friday 12 June.
The ceremony, hosted by BBC Radio Derby’s Andy Potter recognised the unsung heroes of Derby in 14 categories including Inspirational Youngster, Dad of the Year and the Extra Mile Award.
Len was nominated by his next door neighbour Pamela Norton because of how much he does to help his community in Mickleover.
As well as checking in with neighbours, picking up shopping and calling round with the morning papers, the retired painter and decorator does odd jobs like fitting electrical plugs.
Len helps anyone who needs it and said that it helped him to occupy his mind when he was living alone. When he’s not on Neighbourhood Watch, Len volunteers at the Royal Derby Hospital at the League of Friends tea bar in the Orthopaedic Outpatients waiting area.
Len bonded with neighbour Pam after he saved her life and now they’re getting married. Upon collecting his award, Len announced: “We get married in eight days, 15 hours and 20 seconds.” So, Mr Elsmore has plenty to celebrate this month.
