keep your home during winter

How to keep your home warm during winter

During the colder, winter months, you want to come home to a cosy living space. There’s nothing worse than coming back from a day’s work and your house being freezing cold. If this happens to you, we have a few tricks up our sleeve for you to help combat the cold temperatures.

Household tips

  • While keeping your curtains closed will keep the heat in at night, keep them open during the day. Any sunlight will naturally heat up your living space, which will help when you finally draw the curtains as the chilly night sets in. The sun usually sets at around 4pm in the height of winter, so make the most of the natural warmth and leave your curtains open until around 3pm.
  • Make sure your radiators are working to their full potential by bleeding them, checking that no air is trapped, which hinders the heating performance.
  • It may seem obvious, but a great way to stay home on cold nights and avoid using too much energy is simply layering up! Get all your cosy blankets and jumpers out, these are your best friend in the winter.
  • Be clever about your furniture placement. Make sure your sofa or bed aren’t blocking your radiators, as this can stop them heating up the whole room. Instead, position furniture you use the most such as your desk, bed or sofa around any heat sources, without blocking them, to make the most of the warmth. Try to keep them away from any draughty spots, such as by a window or door.

Thermally efficient windows and doors

energy efficient windows and doors

A major hindrance of the warmth in your home are potential draughts and cold spots. This could be down to your windows and doors being a little tired or old. All that precious warm air needs to be trapped in your home for it to stay cosy for you and the family during winter, so having thermally efficient windows and doors will make a huge impact on the temperature of your home, not just in winter, but all year round.

Our windows in Derby boast high performance double glazing to keep your home warm, with an excellent energy efficiency rating of A++. The high thermal efficiency makes them a great long-term investment as they keep your home warm and cosy as well as saving you money on heating bills.

Our composite doors feature superior insulation in comparison to timber or PVCu doors, as they have a 48mm thick solid foam core to keep the warm air in and the cold air out. This makes them a cost effective choice as they keep your energy bills down in the colder months. Not only do they keep your house warm, but they help to keep the noise out, giving your home sound insulation and optimum comfort.

Solid roof conservatory

If you have a conservatory and you find that it is far too cold in the winter months, investing in a solid roof is going to save you so much money and time on keeping your extra living space warm. A replacement solid roof is a popular home improvement option for Derby homeowners as it enables you to use your conservatory in more ways than a glass roof conventionally allows. The tiles offer insulation in the winter, minimising heat loss, meaning that as well as saving money on heating bills, you’ll stay warmer for longer.
